One would have to be oblivious not to notice that a number of films at Black Nights address similar topics. One of them is a phenomenon to which even Estonia is not immune, neo-fascism, which is either directly or indirectly the central theme in three Black Nights films - the Russian "Rossija 88", the Croatian "Metastases" and the newest one of all, the Danish BROTHERHOOD, selected for the Black Nights competition. BROTHERHOOD is mainly about a young man named Lars, who is from a good home but rebels against his world and joins a budding neo-fascist movement, leaving the military profession into which his parents have pressed him. Lars makes new friends in the organization, one of whom becomes more than just a friend. But is love between two men possible in a subculture for whom this kind of love is anathema? The Italian Nicolo Donato, known previously for crafting outstanding advertisements and short films, brings to the screen an unsparing and true-to-life story that will probably touch everyone. When we think about Estonia and what is going on across the border to the east, where neo-fascist organizations have been sprouting like mushrooms after a rain, there might be something to learn from these films. No doubt everyone will find their own takeaway message. Some might be touched even more by the philosophical side of the film, where ideas of permitted and forbidden love intersect. Helmut Jänes
