A true minor masterpiece from South Korea, difficult to classify by genre (and why try?). Occupying the borderlands between romantic and absurd comedy, employing warm and heartfelt humour, and laced with piquant elements of the absurd, it tells the story of a failed suicide that at its heart touches a very poignant theme: conflict between the individual person and urbanized society, a conflict that has grown to a great magnitude and depth. As is often the case in Asian cinema, the film develops on more than one level. The first plotline is simply the story of how two people meet and find each other and it holds our attention without descending into the philosophical depths. But viewers who have the patience to look for meaning in the symbolism and surrender to the various states will be rewarded doubly. To say nothing of the fact that the cinematography is once again first-rate. Tiina Lokk
